About Carlow Builders

How We Work In Newbridge
Everything we take on at Carlow Builders is tarmac and asphalt work. On a driveway in Newbridge the first thing we look at is the surface already there, because that decides whether the job is an overlay or a new installation.
Concrete or older tarmac in good standing can take an overlay. A drive that is sinking needs a new installation, so the surface and base are dug out and a new base is laid, machine rolled with a vibrating roller of around 20 ton.
The edge is fixed first. That means an edging kerb or a border, with the tarmacadam laid inside it afterwards. For a border we lay samples of block paving and cobblestone granite setts out on site so you can pick one.
At the entrance, an edging kerb takes the load of every car arriving off the road or pavement. Leave it out and that entrance line ends up with dips and bumps.
We set the levels a brick and a half to two bricks below the damp proof course. Water is never left to pool on tarmac. The falls carry it to channel drains, which run into the existing drainage or into a soakaway.
Tarmac has to be laid in one run, because it bonds to itself as it is laid and stopping halfway leaves a joining line across the surface. On a large area we plan stopping points before laying starts, generally at a change to paving.
Tarmacking a driveway is not a DIY job. It takes rollers and at least three people on the go at once, and a lot can go wrong on it.
